Solution

Harvey partnered with OpenAI to build a custom-trained model for legal professionals after finding that standard fine-tuning and retrieval-augmented generation could not reliably handle open-ended case-law research. The company combined its secure professional-services platform with a custom case-law model that injects large volumes of legal knowledge and domain-specific reasoning into the base model, first with Delaware case law and then across all U.S. case law. Harvey added the equivalent of 10 billion tokens of data and evaluated the system side by side against GPT-4 with attorneys from 10 major law firms. The resulting workflow helps lawyers ask complex research questions, draft documents, compare large contract sets, and receive longer answers grounded in citations, while Harvey continues exploring agent patterns that combine multiple model calls into more complete legal work products.

Data flow

Lawyer questions and document-review tasks enter the Harvey platform, where the custom-trained case law model reasons over the added legal corpus and returns answers with supporting citations. Side-by-side evaluations and attorney feedback then inform further tuning of the model and future agent workflows.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value95/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale5/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence92%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability23/25
11 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency9/10
2 source references document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
