Hebbia

Document Processing · Enterprise Knowledge Search

Hebbia needed a way to help finance and legal professionals search, interpret, and synthesize huge volumes of private offline documents where standard RAG systems miss implicit answers and manual review takes days or weeks.

$2,000 per hour in legal fees
20-30 hours saved per deal for private equity firms
30-40 hours saved per deal for investment bankers
75% reduction in credit agreement review time

Reported impact

Business outcome

Hebbia raised benchmark accuracy from 68% to 92%, automated large portions of finance and legal analysis, and saved users tens of hours per deal while enabling entirely new live-deal and historical-analysis workflows on private data.

Solution

Hebbia built Matrix as a multi-agent AI platform for finance and legal work, using OpenAI models as specialized reasoning engines rather than relying on a single chatbot. Matrix runs a distributed orchestration engine that breaks complex work into structured steps, routes tasks to the best model, processes entire documents rather than small excerpts, and returns answers with citations. OpenAI o1 handles advanced reasoning, GPT-4o supports broader processing, and smaller models take on narrow tasks, while the orchestration layer gives the system an effectively infinite context window over secure offline data. This lets private-equity, banking, and legal teams run due diligence, covenant extraction, memo drafting, and live-deal analysis on data rooms, contracts, and filings that are too large or implicit for ordinary search. The platform also builds self-improving indexes and feedback loops so AI adoption expands with real workflow value instead of isolated pilots.

Data flow

Private documents from data rooms, contracts, filings, and research sources are indexed by Matrix, then routed through the distributed orchestration engine. The engine assigns reasoning and extraction tasks to OpenAI o1, GPT-4o, and smaller models, synthesizes cited answers, and returns memos, clause interpretations, and due-diligence outputs to end users.

Solution architecture

5 components · 3 layers
  1. Compute
    • OpenAI o1 Provides advanced reasoning for deep research over legal and financial documents.
    • GPT-4o Handles general processing and synthesis tasks inside Matrix.
    • o3-mini Supports targeted subtasks in the broader multi-agent workflow.
  2. Serving
    • Matrix Acts as Hebbia's multi-agent AI platform for end-to-end financial and legal workflows.
  3. Orchestration
    • distributed orchestration engine Breaks work into analytical steps, routes tasks to the right model, and gives the system an effectively infinite context window.

Architecture clues

  • Answers include full citations and a self-improving index
  • Engine processes full documents rather than just excerpts
  • Matrix uses multiple AI agents in parallel instead of a single-agent chatbot
  • Platform can handle offline private data where traditional RAG falls short

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    6 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence94%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability25/25
12 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency9/10
2 source references document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
