Mercado Libre

Customer Service Automation · Fraud Detection

Mercado Libre needed an AI platform that could safely automate complex customer-service mediation and other high-stakes workflows across a massive commerce and fintech environment, not just assist with isolated catalog or review tasks.

17,000 developers responsible for over 30,000 microservices
Autonomously manage customer service decisions involving $450 million annually
Catalogs 100x more products than before in a span of two years
Mercado Pago has 50 million active users each quarter

Solution

Mercado Libre built Verdi as a natural-language-first development platform that lets its 17,000 developers create AI applications across more than 30,000 microservices while keeping security, routing logic, and guardrails built into the platform. Verdi uses GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, and GPT-3.5 Turbo to handle multimodal reasoning, routing, and lightweight tasks, and one of its first major deployments is autonomous customer-service mediation between buyers and sellers. Rather than forcing developers to manage code-level complexity directly, Verdi presents a structured framework of language models, Python nodes, skills, and APIs so teams can compose agentic workflows, including image-based “proof of damage” steps with vision, inter-skill communication, unit testing, and deployment inside Mercado Libre’s internal developer platform. Beyond Verdi, OpenAI models also power inventory expansion, fraud detection, review summarization, product-description localization, and personalized notifications across the broader marketplace.

Data flow

Marketplace listings, disputes, reviews, images, and customer-service cases flow into Verdi’s skill graph, where GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, and GPT-3.5 Turbo combine with Python nodes and APIs to make decisions, call systems, and return outputs. The same model family also enriches listings, detects fraud, summarizes feedback, and personalizes notifications across the marketplace.

Solution architecture

4 components · 2 layers
  1. Compute
    • GPT-4o Handles context-rich and multimodal tasks such as vision-based proof-of-damage analysis and complex workflow reasoning.
    • GPT-4o mini Powers lightweight tasks such as automated review summaries for product feedback.
    • GPT-3.5 Turbo Supports translation and other lower-cost language tasks inside the Verdi ecosystem.
  2. Orchestration
    • Verdi Provides the secure internal AI-development platform for building autonomous workflows at Mercado Libre scale.

Architecture clues

  • Natural language remains the central interaction mode and developers never see the source code
  • Security, guardrails, and routing logic are built directly into Verdi
  • Skills can call one another, such as return workflows invoking shipping workflows
  • Unit testing and lifecycle management are integrated within Mercado Libre’s developer platform

Evidence from the source

"In just a few months, Verdi has started to handle 10% of customer service mediation"
"The biggest difference between Verdi and other solutions is that in Verdi, natural language remains the central mode of interaction"
"Verdi changes this by allowing the AI to manage these interactions"
"improving fraud detection accuracy to nearly 99% for flagged items"

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value100/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    3 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale10/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence87%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance8/10
The publication date comes from publisher-controlled metadata.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
