La Trobe University

Enterprise Knowledge Search

La Trobe University needed faster access to approved research knowledge and a quicker way to turn research findings into market-ready applications, but manual knowledge discovery and limited development capacity slowed both goals.

Solution

La Trobe University worked with IBM on two connected generative-AI use cases built on IBM Watson Discovery, IBM watsonx Assistant and IBM watsonx.ai. In the first, researchers implemented a retrieval-augmented generation architecture over more than 100 autism papers so they could query university-approved knowledge without manually searching every document. Discovery handled source retrieval, watsonx.ai generated grounded responses and watsonx Assistant exposed the interaction layer. In the second, the same IBM watsonx portfolio was used to co-design an application that helped researchers transform their expertise into market-facing offerings much faster than traditional development approaches. The overall architecture paired governed knowledge retrieval with rapid application delivery, letting the university use one AI stack both to streamline research operations and to shorten the path from research insight to deployable solution.

Data flow

Approved research papers are ingested into Discovery, user questions flow through watsonx Assistant, Discovery supplies relevant passages to watsonx.ai for RAG-based answers, and the same IBM watsonx stack supports application development for market-facing use cases.

Solution architecture

3 components · 3 layers
  1. Ingest
    • IBM Watson Discovery Retrieves relevant passages from the university's approved research corpus for RAG-based answers.
  2. Compute
    • IBM watsonx.ai Generates answers and supports rapid development of AI-driven applications built on university expertise.
  3. Serving
    • IBM watsonx Assistant Provides the conversational interface researchers use to query approved knowledge and interact with the solution.

Architecture clues

  • The first use case was a RAG proof of concept over more than 100 autism papers.
  • The same IBM watsonx portfolio was used both for research operations and go-to-market application design.
  • The university chose in-house development on watsonx Assistant instead of outsourcing.

Scoring methodology

How scores are calculated

Customer Reference Value measures usefulness as a customer reference. Evidence Confidence measures the quality and traceability of available evidence, not independent verification.

Customer reference value95/100
  • Problem clarity20/20
Measures whether the customer's operational problem is specific enough to compare.
  • Implementation depth25/25
Rewards named components, data flow, integrations, and architecture detail.
  • Outcome specificity20/20
Measures whether the reported benefit is concrete rather than a generic claim.
  • Quantified impact25/25
    2 metrics describe measurable impact.
  • Deployment scale5/10
Rewards evidence of a live or scaled deployment and meaningful integration scope.
Evidence confidence89%
  • Source authority20/25
The main evidence is an official vendor-published customer story.
  • Claim traceability21/25
10 of 12 key fields link to a named source.
  • Direct evidence20/20
    4 direct source quotes retained.
  • Date provenance10/10
The publication date comes from the source page or publisher.
  • Source transparency8/10
1 source reference document publisher, URL, authority, retrieval, and supported fields.
  • Implementation specificity10/10
Rewards source-backed components, data flow, quantified impact, and a specific outcome.
